Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh cucumbers and gherkins in Suriname underwent a severe multi-year contraction between 2018 and 2021. Volume started at 1 731 tons in 2018 but fell sharply to 1 295 tons the following year. The decline continued into 2020, dropping to 995 tons, before reaching a low of 397 tons in 2021, representing a market less than a quarter of its initial size.

A recovery phase began in 2022, with the market volume increasing to 581 tons and then to 610 tons in 2023. Despite this rebound, consumption levels remained substantially below the 2018 peak. Imports were negligible throughout the period, confirming that domestic production entirely dictated market supply.
