Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, Suriname's watermelon market volume declined from 2 421 t to 1 877 t. The 2018 EU-FAO agreement on exporting non-traditional fruits offered new market access, but production faced a sharp drop in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic's disruption of economic and agricultural activities.

Drought-induced wildfires in 2021 further reduced output, driving market size down to 1 267 t. However, stabilization emerged in 2022 at 1 271 t, supported by government funding for agricultural machinery and training, alongside growing interest from Dutch farmers to establish operations in Suriname.

Despite another contraction to 956 t in 2023, expansion efforts continued through fruit cultivation programs with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture and processing facility upgrades. In 2024, the launch of Suriname's first seed bank and subsidies for fruit processing equipment underscored ongoing investments to strengthen the sector.
