The watermelon market in Tajikistan expanded in 2019 to 701.4 thousand tonnes, driven by high yields on irrigated land and the adoption of improved cultivation techniques. This growth built on the foundation laid in 2018 when southern regions began harvesting for export to Russia and Kazakhstan. However, the market contracted in 2020 to 658.1 thousand tonnes due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and global economic disruptions.

A recovery began in 2021, with market volume reaching 667.1 thousand tonnes supported by continued yield improvements and a rise in early-season exports. Growth accelerated in 2022, climbing to 680.3 thousand tonnes as cultivated area expanded and export volumes surged by more than 35%. The market then stabilized in 2023 at 668.2 thousand tonnes.

After two years of growth, Tajikistan's watermelon production declined. In 2020, the country produced 658.1 thousand tons of watermelons, a decrease of 6.1% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production overall increased by 4.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.4%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 701.3 thousand tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 9.3%.
