This growth was supported by government programs like Pro Company and Stimula Empreenda+, which facilitated the entry of new entrepreneurs into the food retail sector, leading to a rise in supermarkets and mini-markets. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 accelerated the digitalization of fresh produce sales, with the launch of an online shopping app for markets in Praia, helping to maintain consumer access and supporting market volume despite global disruptions.

Following the 2020 peak, market volume contracted to 1,160 t in 2021 as production declined, though the trend towards online sales of fresh produce continued. The market recovered to 1,384 t in 2022, aided by ongoing public policies to incentivize consumption of local and organic products and persistent efforts to boost national fruit output to reduce import dependency. However, in 2023, the market volume decreased again to 1,197 t, reflecting volatility in domestic production and import flows.

Cabo Verde's watermelon production has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 1 256 tonnes of watermelons, marking a 26.3% increase compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 6.5%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 2.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 928 tonnes, representing the largest decline of 21.4% during this period.

After two years of growth, Cabo Verde's watermelon imports in kind declined. In 2020, imports amounted to 127.5 tonnes, showing a 62.8% drop compared to the previous year. Over the 2017–2020 period, imports decreased by 22.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of -8.0%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 342.9 tonnes, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with a 63.0% rise.
