The market for fresh grapes in Serbia showed overall growth from 2018 to 2022, with market volume increasing from 160.1 thousand tons to a peak of 174.8 thousand tons. This upward trend was interrupted in 2023 when the market contracted sharply to 143.8 thousand tons. In value terms, the market reached its highest point at $144.8 million in 2020 before declining to $104.9 million in 2022 and partially recovering to $113.2 million in 2023.

The production increase in 2022 was supported by state-provided favorable loans for viticulture, which encouraged vineyard expansion and higher grape output, particularly in the Telečka visoravan region of Vojvodina. The subsequent drop in production and market volume in 2023 coincided with growing awareness of climate change and the implementation of vineyard classification models to adapt cultivation practices, factors that likely affected yields and supply.

In 2020, Serbia produced 160.3 thousand tons of fresh grapes, marking a 2.0% decrease from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production declined by 3.2%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 1.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 149.5 thousand tons, which also saw the largest decline of 9.7%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the largest increase of 9.4%.

Fresh grape production in Serbia increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 135.0 million US dollars, up by 19.4% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 10.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 109.9 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 10.2%.

Exports fresh grapes from Serbia

After two years of growth, Serbia's cross-border shipments of fresh grapes declined. In 2020, exports totaled 668 tons, down by 39.9% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 31%, equating to an average annual decline of 11.6%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 1 113 tons, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 10.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Montenegro, Russia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina formed the core of Serbia's fresh grape exports in kind. Montenegro accounted for 35.6% of exports, Russia for 27.5%, and Bosnia and Herzegovina for 14.3%, together representing 77.3% of total export flows.

Serbia's fresh grape exports declined in value for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 563 thousand US dollars, which is 26.9% less than the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 21.4%, with an average annual decline of 7.7%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 784 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 9.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia remained Serbia's key partners in fresh grape exports by value. Russia accounted for 36.4% of exports, Montenegro for 30.4%, and North Macedonia for 9.7%, together making up 76.4% of total export flows.

In 2020, Serbia's fresh grape imports totaled 13 575 tons, showing a solid increase of 20.5% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 26.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.3%. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 4.0%.
