The ASEAN watermelon market volume grew from 1.97 million tons in 2018 to 2.31 million tons in 2020, before contracting sharply to 1.85 million tons in 2021. Recovery followed, with volume reaching 2.06 million tons by 2023. In value terms, the market value followed a similar trend, peaking at $978 million in 2020, falling to $775 million in 2022, and rebounding to $919 million in 2023.

For 2024, key market factors included extreme weather conditions affecting production volumes and transport costs. The seedless watermelon segment also gained market share due to growing consumer preference for convenience. In parts of Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, watermelon prices declined as farmers increased production ahead of Ramadan, leading to an oversupply when actual consumption did not meet expectations.

Watermelon production in ASEAN has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, ASEAN produced 2 608 K t of watermelons, representing a 5.2% year-over-year increase. From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 16.7%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.3%.

Exported watermelon volumes from ASEAN declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports registered 303.1 K t, which is 21.9% lower than in 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 19.9%, equating to an annualized rate of -7.1%. The peak volume was recorded in 2018 at 407.4 K t, with the largest increase also occurring in 2018 at 7.7%.

Watermelon shipments from ASEAN to abroad declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 126.6 M $ US, down by 28.6% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 35.7%, with an annualized rate of -13.7%.
