Earlier Report Observations

The ASEAN lemons and limes market volume grew from 199 thousand tons in 2018 to 226 thousand tons in 2020, driven largely by a rise in imports which increased by 46% over the period. Early regional production was bolstered by a sharp 120% expansion of harvested area and higher yields in Malaysia during 2018. However, overall output dipped to 178 thousand tons by 2020.

Production recovered after 2020, reaching a peak of 197.6 thousand tons in 2022. This increase was supported by strong consecutive output growth in the Philippines, where production rose by 6.9% in 2022, partly countering a simultaneous 42.3% production drop in Malaysia due to reduced harvested area. By 2023, a global 1.2% decline in production coincided with a slight stabilization of ASEAN output at 197 thousand tons, while the total market volume expanded to 235 thousand tons, aided by stronger import flows.

In 2024, imports into the region rose further to 93.6 thousand tons and exports increased to 72.8 thousand tons, reflecting continued active trade. This occurred against a backdrop of a continued production decline in Malaysia and a 6.5% contraction in the global market value.
