Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, the walnut market volume in New Zealand decreased from 1 793 tonnes to 1 534 tonnes. While consumer demand for walnuts' nutritional benefits remained positive, production challenges such as walnut blight and frost damage limited yields. Additionally, walnut exports fell significantly, reducing external demand.

The industry took steps to consolidate and modernize in response. In 2022, growers organized under the Walnuts New Zealand Co-operative, which invested in high-tech sorting and processing equipment to improve product quality and efficiency. These efforts helped stabilize domestic production, which reached 619 tonnes in 2023 after previous declines.

In the following years, the focus shifted toward developing value-added products like walnut oil and flour, and promoting walnut growing as a sustainable land-use alternative. Water management and site selection continued to be critical factors for production success, as the co-operative expanded its marketing under the Trickett’s Grove brand.
