The market for vinegar-preserved vegetables, pulses and potatoes in Tajikistan stood at 1,178 t in 2018, but contracted sharply to 967 t the following year. By 2020, the volume had declined further to 923 t, marking a sustained downturn in the early part of the period.

From 2021 onward, the market rebounded, reaching 1,000 t in 2021 and 1,022 t in 2022. This recovery aligned with increased consumer focus on home canning and local production during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as spillover effects from vegetable price movements in Russia. However, in 2023 the market fell again to 873 t, pressured by growing competition from fresh vegetable imports from Afghanistan and rising food prices. In 2024, new mandatory labeling rules for preserved products came into force, requiring identification marks from September, which may shape future market conditions.

Tajikistan's production of vegetables, pulses, and potatoes in vinegar has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 806 tonnes, marking a slight decrease of 0.9% from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production fell by 15%, with an average annual decline of 5.3%. The highest output was recorded in 2018 at 1 005 tonnes, which saw a 5.9% increase that year. However, the most significant drop occurred in 2019, with a sharp decline of 19.0%.

The market showed an unstable pattern over the observed period. Exports of vegetables, pulses, and potatoes in vinegar from Tajikistan totaled 14.6 tonnes in 2020, representing a substantial reduction of 47.3% compared to the previous year. The peak was in 2019 at 27.7 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 1 206.2%. In contrast, the lowest point was in 2017, with fluctuations reaching up to 107 times between these highs and lows.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan were the top destinations for Tajikistan's exports of vegetables, pulses, and potatoes in vinegar. The United States accounted for 45.4% of exports, Kyrgyzstan for 25.2%, and Uzbekistan for 22.2%. Together, these three countries made up 92.8% of total export flows.

Market performance showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. In 2020, Tajikistan exported 15.9 thousand US dollars worth of vegetables, pulses, and potatoes in vinegar, down by 31.8% from the previous year. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 23.2 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest increase of 3 049.1%. The lowest point was in 2017, with a peak-to-trough ratio of 64 times between these years.

Between 2017 and 2020, Kyrgyzstan and the United States remained the primary buyers of vegetables, pulses, and potatoes in vinegar from Tajikistan in value terms. Together, they accounted for 90.3% of total exports, while the remaining share was distributed among other countries.

In 2020, imports amounted to 130.6 tonnes, corresponding to a decrease of 27.7% year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 17%, with an average annual decline of 6.0%. The highest volume was in 2019 at 180.6 tonnes, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 11.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, China, Russia, and Kyrgyzstan led as the main suppliers of vegetables, pulses, and potatoes in vinegar to Tajikistan. China contributed 41.1% of imports, Russia 34.1%, and Kyrgyzstan 8.7%. Combined, these three countries represented 83.9% of total imports in kind.

Following a two-year rise, Tajikistan's imports of vegetables, pulses, and potatoes in vinegar in value terms declined. In 2020, imports reached 166.0 thousand US dollars, down by 14.3% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 2.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 0.8%. The peak value was in 2019 at 193.7 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 18.8%.

In the period from 2017 to 2020, Russia, China, and Belarus continued to top the list of suppliers of vegetables, pulses, and potatoes in vinegar to Tajikistan in value terms. Russia accounted for 42.3% of imports, China for 30.6%, and Belarus for 6.9%. Together, these three countries held 79.8% of total import value.
