The grape wine market in Tajikistan fluctuated between 2018 and 2023, with a peak volume in 2022. Production remained constrained by the historical dry law prohibiting alcohol production and sales since 1985, which continued to hinder the wine industry's post-Soviet recovery. Despite reported increases in grape output and vineyard area, winemaking development lagged as grapes were often leased or exported raw to neighboring countries like Kazakhstan and Afghanistan, limiting domestic processing into wine.

A notable shift occurred with the resumption of operations at a major wine factory in 2021, which improved sales channels for local grape growers. However, high production costs driven by expensive fuel, fertilizers, and labor reduced the competitiveness of local grape cultivation. The industry began renewing vineyards with new varieties aimed at meeting safety and export standards, a long-term effort expected to yield results after several years, which contributed to the production increase observed in 2022.

By 2023, wine production declined significantly as growth in grape harvests did not translate into expanded winemaking. Instead, the export of high-value table grapes to markets such as the UAE, Japan, and the USA diverted raw materials away from wine processing. The absence of new major players or large-scale investments in winemaking facilities throughout the period kept the industry's capacity limited.

In 2020, Tajikistan produced 221.3 thousand liters of grape wine, marking a 1.2% increase compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 9.3%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 3.0%. The largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 8.0%, while the smallest change was recorded in 2019 with no significant variation.

Imports grape wine to Tajikistan

Tajikistan's grape wine imports declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports totaled 152.0 thousand liters, representing a 16.1% decrease from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 10.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of -3.6%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 195.8 thousand liters, which also saw the largest annual increase of 15.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Georgia, Moldova, and France were the leading suppliers of grape wine to Tajikistan, accounting for 34.3%, 17.9%, and 16.7% of imports in volume, respectively. Together, these three countries made up 68.9% of total imports in kind.

Following a two-year upward trend, Tajikistan's grape wine import value dropped in 2020. Imports amounted to 616 thousand US dollars, a sharp decline of 44.9% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, import value decreased by 6.8%, averaging an annual decline of 2.3%. The peak value was reached in 2019 at 1 117 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest annual increase of 52.1%.

During the 2017–2020 period, Georgia, France, and Moldova remained the primary suppliers of grape wine to Tajikistan in value terms, contributing 36.6%, 25.5%, and 12.1% of imports, respectively. Collectively, these three countries accounted for 74.2% of total import value.
