The market volume for unroasted, not decaffeinated coffee in Western Africa showed considerable variation between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 297 thousand tons in 2018, consumption fell to 251 thousand tons the following year before recovering to a peak of 325 thousand tons in 2021. The market then contracted over the next two years, dropping to 231 thousand tons by 2023.

This trajectory was primarily a function of changes in domestic production and export activity. Local production declined from 384 thousand tons in 2018 to 275 thousand tons in 2023, albeit with a temporary increase in 2022. Concurrently, export volumes were volatile, with a sharp drop to 30 thousand tons in 2021 contributing to the larger domestic market volume that year, while stronger exports in other periods reduced local availability.

Measured in value, the market followed a different path. Its worth grew from $522 million in 2018 to $578 million in 2022, indicating a period of higher prices, before declining to $431 million in 2023 alongside the lower volume.

Western Africa's production of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 352.7 thousand tons, marking a modest year-over-year decrease of 3.6%. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 28.5%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 8.7%. The highest production volume was recorded in 2018 at 384.0 thousand tons, with the largest annual increase of 40.0% also occurring that year. In contrast, 2019 saw the most significant decline, with production dropping by 4.7%.

The value of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee production in Western Africa has also fallen for two consecutive years. In 2020, output was valued at 511.2 million US dollars, representing an 8.6% decrease compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, the production value increased by 4.5%, averaging an annual growth rate of 1.5%. The peak value was reached in 2018 at 674.2 million US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 37.9%. The most substantial decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 17.1%.

Export volumes of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee from Western Africa showed significant volatility during this period. The lowest point was in 2017, while exports peaked in 2019, with a 2.5-fold difference between these years. In 2020, exports amounted to 76.8 thousand tons, a sharp decline of 35.6% from 2019. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 119.2 thousand tons, and the largest annual increase occurred in 2018, with growth of 89.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main destinations for unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee exports from Western Africa were Algeria, Spain, and Morocco. Algeria accounted for 42.2% of export volumes, Spain for 13.5%, and Morocco for 8.3%. Together, these three countries represented 64.0% of total export flows.

The lowest value was recorded in 2017, while the highest was in 2019, with a 2.2-fold difference. In 2020, export value dropped to 111.2 million US dollars, a decrease of 38.9% compared to the previous year. The peak value was in 2019 at 182.1 million US dollars, and the largest annual increase was in 2018, with growth of 86.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the primary buyers of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee from Western Africa in value terms were Algeria, Spain, and Morocco. In 2020, imports reached approximately 4.4 thousand tons, a 15.7% rise from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, import volumes grew by 114.8%, averaging an annual growth rate of 29.0%.

During the 2017–2020 period, imports of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee into Western Africa were relatively evenly distributed among various sources. The top suppliers were China, India, and Brazil, accounting for 12.0%, 8.5%, and 4.4% of import volumes, respectively. Together, these three countries represented only 24.8% of total import flows.

In 2020, the value of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee imports into Western Africa amounted to 5.5 million US dollars, showing a strong increase of 34.4% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, import value grew by 29.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 4.1 million US dollars, which also saw the largest annual decline of 7.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, the geographical structure of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee imports into Western Africa in value terms was highly diversified. The leading suppliers were India, Brazil, and China, accounting for 15.1%, 14.8%, and 12.4% of import value, respectively. Together, these three countries made up only 42.4% of total import flows, while the remaining 57.6% was spread across numerous smaller partner countries.
