From 2018 to 2023, the market for unmanufactured tobacco in Trinidad and Tobago showed considerable volatility. Market volume peaked at 1 906 t in 2019, a 15% increase from the 1 659 t recorded in 2018.
Following the peak, the market contracted by 8% in 2020 to 1 754 t and fell further by 16% in 2021 to 1 478 t. A partial recovery to 1 628 t occurred in 2022, but volume declined again by 10% in 2023 to 1 460 t.
Domestic production remained stable at around 191-194 t per year, while imports, which constitute the bulk of the market, fluctuated and drove the overall market movements.
