The turkey meat market in Northern Europe expanded from 216.0 thousand tons in 2018 to 237.4 thousand tons in 2019, then stabilized at 235.2 thousand tons in 2020. A period of contraction followed, with the market volume decreasing to 200.1 thousand tons in 2021 and further to 183.4 thousand tons in 2022, before a slight recovery to 191.9 thousand tons in 2023. Domestic production mirrored this pattern, rising until 2020 before a sharp decline to 164.1 thousand tons in 2021 and a continued drop to 149.3 thousand tons in 2023.

Import and export flows showed distinct trends over the period. Imports declined from 72.4 thousand tons in 2018 to 50.3 thousand tons in 2022, before rising to 57.5 thousand tons in 2023 and reaching 62.9 thousand tons in 2024. Exports consistently fell from 52.1 thousand tons in 2018 to 14.9 thousand tons in 2023, then increased to 17.3 thousand tons in 2024. Market activity in 2024 was influenced by new product launches from major players like Cargill, which introduced an antibiotic-free turkey line, and Bernard Matthews, which rolled out frozen fillets with international flavors. The expansion of retail distribution for turkey deli meats and the emergence of plant-based hybrid turkey products also contributed to shifting supply dynamics, supported by consumer demand for clean-label and ethically sourced options.

The peak was recorded in 2019 at 211.9 thousand tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 8.2%.

Turkey meat and offal exports from Northern Europe declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 30 713 tons, representing a 26.6% decrease compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 44.4%, with an annualized decline rate of 17.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, the export structure for turkey meat and offal was balanced rather than concentrated. Germany accounted for 17.0% of exports in kind, the Netherlands for 11.4%, and France for 6.3%. Together, these three countries represented 34.8% of total flows, while many other countries accounted for the remaining 65.2%.
