Earlier Report Observations

The African market for fresh, chilled, or frozen turkey meat and offal grew from 389 thousand tonnes in 2018 to a peak of 409 thousand tonnes in 2020, before stabilizing around 407 thousand tonnes in 2023. This expansion was supported by steady growth in domestic production, which increased from 254 thousand tonnes to 303 thousand tonnes over the same period, while import volumes gradually contracted.

By 2024, imports had declined to 102 thousand tonnes. This trend was influenced by regulatory changes in key regional markets, notably South Africa's ban on poultry imports from Brazil following outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. Concurrently, high feed prices and an ongoing energy crisis raised production costs across the poultry sector.

These conditions accelerated a shift in market structure, with smaller farmers facing severe pressure while larger operations adapted. The import restrictions also changed product flows, leading to a sharp, multi-year decline in bone-in poultry portion imports and a concurrent rise in shipments of mechanically deboned meat.
