Hungarian turkey meat production reached over 80 000 t in 2020 but then entered a sustained decline, falling to 56 210 t by 2023. The domestic market volume mirrored this movement, also peaking at nearly 57 000 t in 2020 before contracting to 40 002 t in 2023.

In value terms, the market followed a different trajectory. After dropping to $131 million in 2021, the market size recovered strongly to $174.9 million in 2023, exceeding its pre-2020 value despite the lower physical volume.

Trade flows adjusted during this period, with exports decreasing from 35 969 t in 2018 to 20 597 t in 2023. Imports remained relatively stable, fluctuating between 3 600 t and 4 400 t, which influenced the net volume available domestically.

In 2021, Hungary produced 73 330 tonnes of turkey meat and offal, which represents a 9.2% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, production fell by 7.6%, with an average annual decline of 2.6%. The highest production level was recorded in 2020 at 80 760 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 3.2%.

In 2021, the output of turkey meat and offal in Hungary was valued at 234.0 million US dollars, marking a 1.8% increase from 2020. However, over the 2018-2021 period, production value decreased by 14.2%, with an average annual decline of 5.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 229.7 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest annual decline of 15.8%. The peak value occurred in 2019 at 272.7 million US dollars.

Exports turkey meat and offal from Hungary

Hungary's turkey meat and offal exports rebounded in 2021 after two consecutive years of decline. Exports reached 36 039 tonnes, representing a significant 21.6% increase compared to 2020. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2020 at 29 627 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual decline of 16.2%.

An analysis of export volumes from 2018 to 2021 reveals a broad distribution across multiple markets. Romania accounted for 23.0% of exports, Austria for 14.3%, and Slovakia for 10.6%. Together, these three countries represented 48.0% of total export flows, while the remaining 52.0% was distributed among various other trading partners.

Hungary's turkey meat and offal export values increased in 2021 following two years of reduction. Exports reached 115.0 million US dollars, showing a substantial 36.4% growth compared to the previous year. However, over the 2018-2021 period, export values decreased by 6.9%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 2.4%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 84.3 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest annual decline of 31.6%.

From 2018 to 2021, Hungary's turkey meat and offal export values were widely distributed across partner countries. Austria accounted for 18.3% of export value, Romania for 16.6%, and Switzerland for 10.4%. Together, these three countries represented 45.3% of total export flows.

Imports turkey meat and offal to Hungary

Hungary's imports of turkey meat and offal declined for the second consecutive year in 2021. Import volumes fell to 3 800 tonnes, representing a sharp 34.8% decrease year-over-year. Over the 2018-2021 period, imports decreased by 37.1%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 14.3%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 6 747 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 11.8%.

From 2018 to 2021, Austria, Germany, and Poland remained the leading suppliers of turkey meat and offal to Hungary. Austria accounted for 32.5% of import volume, Germany for 28.0%, and Poland for 18.6%. Together, these three countries represented 79.2% of total import volume.

Hungary's imports of turkey meat and offal declined for the second consecutive year in 2021. Import values fell to 12.0 million US dollars, down 12.8% year-over-year. The highest import value was recorded in 2019 at 14.8 million US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 22.4%.

From 2018 to 2021, Austria, Poland, and Germany remained the principal suppliers of turkey meat and offal to Hungary in value terms. Austria accounted for 32.4% of import value, Poland for 25.1%, and Germany for 23.1%. Together, these three countries represented 80.5% of total import value.
