The triticale market in Tunisia expanded significantly in 2019, with production reaching 31 000 metric tons. This growth was primarily driven by the implementation of 2018 government decrees that simplified business procedures and provided financial restructuring support for agricultural SMEs. Additionally, the state price intervention policy for barley and triticale ensured market stability for producers.

Production then fell to 26 000 metric tons in 2020 and further to 23 300 metric tons in 2021. This decline was caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted global supply chains and trade, and by persistent drought conditions that reduced crop yields. Rising world commodity prices also made imports more expensive, putting additional pressure on the domestic market.

By 2022 and 2023, output stabilized around 23 000 metric tons. Although new support measures were introduced, including fixed intervention prices for triticale and exceptional aid for the agricultural campaign, ongoing drought and high temperatures limited recovery. The free commercialization of barley and triticale, unlike regulated wheat, offered flexibility but did not offset the climatic challenges.

Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 20.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.4%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 19 100 tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2019 with 31 000 tonnes. The most significant year-on-year increase was observed in 2019, when production surged by 62.3%.
