The triticale market in the Netherlands stood at 93.8 thousand tons in 2018. It declined to 77.2 thousand tons in 2019, partly due to dry and hot summer conditions across Europe which reduced import availability.

Market volume surged to 111.1 thousand tons in 2020 and further to 146.7 thousand tons in 2021. This growth was driven by triticale's recognition as a high-yielding and drought-resistant feed crop, boosting demand from the livestock sector. Its adoption as a whole-plant silage (GPS) crop as an alternative to corn silage also supported increased consumption.

After a modest dip to 137.8 thousand tons in 2022, likely because of competition from hybrid rye in crop rotations, the market rebounded to 164.3 thousand tons in 2023. Environmental regulations played a key role: lower nitrogen-use norms in nutrient-polluted zones constrained domestic production and raised import reliance. Meanwhile, the EU Common Agricultural Policy's sustainability focus encouraged demand for crops that meet environmental objectives.

In 2020, the Netherlands produced 5,460 tonnes of triticale, marking a significant 22.6% decrease compared to 2019. Production reached its lowest point in 2018 at 5,320 tonnes, while the peak was recorded in 2019 at 7,050 tonnes, representing a 32.5% increase that year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production declined by 14.6%, averaging an annual decrease of 5.1%.
