Earlier Report Observations

The triticale market in Belarus expanded from 1.0 million tonnes in 2018 to 1.5 million tonnes in 2020. This growth was supported by the crop's established role, with annual sowings of about 450,000 hectares, and its primary use in compound feed and alcohol production. In 2019, the announced construction of a large amino acid production complex using triticale as raw material, slated for launch in 2021, created additional forward demand expectations. Continued expansion of sown areas and active industrial utilization further drove market volume growth in 2020.

Market volume contracted sharply to 1.0 million tonnes in 2021, a correction following the prior expansion. During this period, Belarus strengthened its position as the world's second-largest country by triticale sown area, with over 86% of plantings using domestic varieties. A recovery to 1.2 million tonnes occurred in 2022, partly aided by the introduction of new triticale varieties with improved baking qualities, which broadened application in the food industry. However, the market volume decreased again to 987,000 tonnes in 2023.

In 2024, eight new winter triticale varieties with high protein content were added to the State Register, targeting bread-making and functional food segments. The development of amino acid production using triticale as feedstock also progressed, contributing to domestic demand for the crop.
