Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the triticale market volume in the CIS expanded from 1 418 thousand tonnes to 1 858 thousand tonnes. This growth was driven by active production increases in Russia as farmers showed growing interest in new varieties and prospects for the crop. In 2018, state-owned Russian Trading Organization (RTO) conducted procurement campaigns, supporting market activity. The following year, sown areas in Russia rose by 4%, and new triticale varieties were registered in Ukraine, indicating continued development in seed breeding and variety assortment.

Market volume dropped sharply to 1 314 thousand tonnes in 2021, reflecting a broader decline in grain harvests across Russia, which fell by 10.2% that year. A recovery followed in 2022, with volume reaching 1 505 thousand tonnes, fueled by rising demand for triticale in feed applications and improved baking technologies that incorporated triticale flour. During this period, seed companies actively offered new high-yield varieties such as 'Tikhon' and 'Khleborob', supporting production capabilities.

In 2023, the market contracted again to 1 305 thousand tonnes. Throughout the observed period, the sector saw ongoing seed‑breeding improvements, including the registration of new varieties in Ukraine, and legislative updates to Russia’s seed‑growing law that took effect in September 2023, shaping the regulatory environment for triticale cultivation.
