Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, Senegal's tomato production fluctuated. The initial increase to 148,000 tons in 2019 was supported by state-led coordination through the National Committee for the Industrial Tomato Sector and technical assistance from partners like the Cncas and the Horticulture Directorate. This framework helped the industrial tomato sector, though persistent difficulties in siting processing plants near production areas limited optimal development. Production then fell to 135,400 tons in 2020.

Output rebounded strongly to 155,100 tons in 2021. In 2022, the publication of a technical sheet on tomatoes by ISRA CDH highlighted ongoing efforts to improve agricultural practices, while market volume stabilized at around 146,500 tons. Production grew again to 153,100 tons in 2023, aided by favorable climatic conditions, access to production factors, and a dedicated government horticulture policy, which included establishing a Directorate of Horticulture within the agriculture ministry to further develop the sector.

By 2024, Senegal was cultivating a dynamic export segment for cherry tomatoes, meeting international quality standards. The Directorate of Plant Protection influenced phytosanitary regulations for trade, and efforts continued to improve the supply of fresh vegetables to local markets with a focus on quality and sustainable practices, underpinning the market's evolution.
