Earlier Report Observations

The Chinese fresh tomato market volume rose from 60 715 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 62 673 thousand tonnes in 2019. This expansion was supported by stable planting areas and the widespread adoption of yield-improving technologies such as greenhouse cultivation and hydroponics. Concurrently, China solidified its position as the world's largest processed-tomato producer, which bolstered overall tomato output.

In 2020, market volume slipped to 60 728 thousand tonnes as the sector faced persistent challenges, including slow variety renewal and inadequate mechanization. Volume recovered to 61 289 thousand tonnes in 2021 thanks to enhanced agronomic techniques and better crop management, even though falling wholesale prices eroded grower profitability.

Market volume remained steady around 61 500 thousand tonnes in 2022-2023. Growing health consciousness among consumers lifted demand for fresh, high-quality tomatoes, while tighter food-safety regulations for tomato-juice products raised quality standards throughout the chain. In 2023, subdued export activity—driven by trade-policy uncertainties and currency fluctuations—boosted domestic supply, exerting downward pressure on prices and contributing to a pronounced decline in market value, which fell from 80 935 million USD in 2022 to 64 516 million USD in 2023.
