Tomato market in Montenegro

The volume of Montenegro's tomato market showed considerable movement between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 13.5 thousand metric tons in 2018, it declined to 12.7 thousand metric tons in 2019 and then contracted sharply to 9.2 thousand metric tons in 2020. A sustained recovery began thereafter, with the market growing to 10.5 thousand metric tons in 2021, 12.2 thousand metric tons in 2022, and finally reaching 13.2 thousand metric tons in 2023.

This pattern was mirrored by changes in domestic supply and international trade. Local tomato production fell from 4.9 thousand metric tons in 2018 to a low of 2.8 thousand metric tons in 2020, before rebounding strongly to around 4.3 thousand metric tons in the following two years. Imports, which form the bulk of market volume, also dropped significantly from 9.9 thousand metric tons in 2019 to 6.5 thousand metric tons in 2020, subsequently rising to 8.9 thousand metric tons by 2023, supporting the overall market expansion.

Tomato production in Montenegro has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 2 823 tonnes of tomatoes, marking a slight decrease of 1.8% compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 40.8%, which translates to an average annual decline of 16.0%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 4 866 tonnes. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, with a decrease of 40.9%, while the largest increase was seen in 2018 at 2.1%.

The export market for tomatoes from Montenegro showed considerable volatility during the observed period. The lowest point was in 2019, with exports dropping to just 2 tonnes, representing a decline of 58.3%. In contrast, exports peaked in 2020 at 36 tonnes, which was a dramatic increase of 1 397.3% compared to the previous year. The gap between these two years was substantial, with 2020 exports being 15 times higher than in 2019.

From 2017 to 2020, the key destinations for Montenegro's tomato exports in volume terms were Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, and Serbia. Bosnia and Herzegovina accounted for 36.2% of exports, Albania for 31.3%, and Serbia for 29.5%. Together, these three countries made up 97.0% of Montenegro's total tomato export flows during this period.

The value of tomato exports from Montenegro displayed an unstable trend over the timeframe. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 2 thousand US dollars, which saw a decline of 57.2%. In 2020, exports rebounded sharply to 18 thousand US dollars, an increase of 718.1% compared to 2019. The fluctuation between these years was significant, with 2020 exports being 8.2 times higher than in 2019.

During the 2017–2020 period, the main buyers of Montenegrin tomatoes in value terms were Albania, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Albania led with 32.4% of export value, followed by Serbia at 30.7%, and Bosnia and Herzegovina at 26.5%. Collectively, these three countries accounted for 89.6% of Montenegro's total tomato export value.

After two years of growth, Montenegro's tomato imports declined. The peak was in 2019, with imports reaching 9 851 tonnes, an increase of 13.4% from the previous year. However, in 2020, imports fell to 6 462 tonnes, a drop of 34.4% compared to 2019. Over the entire 2017–2020 period, imports decreased by 24.8%, averaging an annual decline of 9.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Serbia and Albania were the dominant sources for Montenegro's tomato imports in volume terms. These two countries concentrated most of the imports, while other markets played a less significant role individually.

Following a two-year upward trend, Montenegro's tomato imports in value terms declined. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 6 388 thousand US dollars, which included an increase of 12.2% in 2018. In 2020, imports decreased to 4 502 thousand US dollars, down by 29.5% from the previous year. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 16.4%, with an average annual decrease of 5.8%.

Throughout 2017–2020, the key partners for Montenegro's tomato imports in value terms were Albania, Serbia, and Turkey. Albania accounted for 40.6% of import value, Serbia for 33.7%, and Turkey for 9.0%. Together, these three countries represented 83.2% of the total import flows during this period.
