Earlier Report Observations
The volume of Montenegro's tomato market showed considerable movement between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 13.5 thousand metric tons in 2018, it declined to 12.7 thousand metric tons in 2019 and then contracted sharply to 9.2 thousand metric tons in 2020. A sustained recovery began thereafter, with the market growing to 10.5 thousand metric tons in 2021, 12.2 thousand metric tons in 2022, and finally reaching 13.2 thousand metric tons in 2023.
This pattern was mirrored by changes in domestic supply and international trade. Local tomato production fell from 4.9 thousand metric tons in 2018 to a low of 2.8 thousand metric tons in 2020, before rebounding strongly to around 4.3 thousand metric tons in the following two years. Imports, which form the bulk of market volume, also dropped significantly from 9.9 thousand metric tons in 2019 to 6.5 thousand metric tons in 2020, subsequently rising to 8.9 thousand metric tons by 2023, supporting the overall market expansion.
