Earlier Report Observations

China's fresh potato market volume fluctuated between 89.8 million tons in 2018 and 93.0 million tons in 2023. After a slight dip to 89.0 million tons in 2019, volume rose to 92.4 million tons in 2020 and reached 94.0 million tons in 2021. A decline to 91.8 million tons followed in 2022, with a recovery to 93.0 million tons in 2023, reflecting overall growth of about 3.2 million tons over the six-year period.

In 2024, supply-demand tensions in North China led to scarce high-quality potatoes and price fluctuations, while consumer awareness of healthy eating supported demand. Regulatory changes included the national introduction of electronic agricultural licenses from November 2024, affecting production compliance costs. Additionally, an anti-dumping review on EU potato starch imports influenced domestic deep-processing costs and trade conditions.
