Earlier Report Observations

Sweet potato production in Eastern Africa increased from 17.4 million tonnes in 2018 to over 19 million tonnes in 2021. This growth was supported by a rise in agricultural activity in Uganda, where output had expanded in prior years, and by market consolidation through acquisitions such as Jackson Farming Company's move to strengthen its presence. Additionally, growing consumer awareness of nutritional benefits and the emergence of new product segments, including sweet potato-based beverages, further drove demand during these years.

Production declined to 17.3 million tonnes in 2022 and then stabilized at approximately 17.1 million tonnes in 2023. The reduction was influenced by challenges highlighted in the market, such as pest and disease management issues and constraints in cold-chain infrastructure, which limited output despite increasing global demand for processed sweet potato products.
