Market volume showed modest recovery in 2020 but declined again in 2021 and 2022, reaching a low of 274.3 thousand tons. Price fluctuations continued to influence market value; import prices rose to $0.86 per kg in 2020, while by 2023 export prices had climbed to $2.14 per kg. This price increase, alongside diversified imports from Canada, the UAE, Russia, India, and the Netherlands, supported a rebound in market value to $207.6 million in 2023.

Production of chickpeas in Kenya is adapted to semi-arid regions, requiring minimal rainfall and allowing year-round cultivation. This resilience in growing conditions helps sustain production even as export-oriented market dynamics and price volatility shape overall supply and demand.

In 2020, Eastern Africa produced 503.9 thousand tonnes of dried shelled chickpeas, marking a 2.6% increase from the previous year. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production actually declined by 8.2%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 2.8%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 490.9 thousand tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2018 with 555.2 thousand tonnes. The most significant drop was observed in 2019, when production fell by 11.6%.

Following a two-year decline, dried shelled chickpeas production in Eastern Africa rebounded in 2020. The output was valued at 299.6 million US dollars, representing an 11.4% increase compared to the previous year. Dried shelled chickpeas imports into Eastern Africa increased for the third consecutive year in 2020. Imports amounted to 11.5 thousand tonnes, showing an abrupt 155.8% rise compared to 2019.
