The market volume for sunflower, safflower, or cottonseed oil in MERCOSUR showed considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. After an initial increase to 1.3 million tons in 2019, consumption dipped in 2020 before surging to a peak of 1.5 million tons in 2021. This was followed by a sharp contraction to 1.0 million tons in 2022, largely due to a jump in export volumes which exceeded production growth. The market then recovered to 1.3 million tons in 2023, supported by a significant rise in domestic output.

Production levels fluctuated throughout the period, with a drop in 2020 followed by recovery in subsequent years. Export activity varied considerably, with high shipments in 2022 and 2023 absorbing a large portion of production. In 2023, international trade flows remained active, with key sales channels through Mexico pointing to sustained external demand for oils from the region. Import volumes remained relatively low, indicating that the market was primarily supplied by domestic production.
