Earlier Report Observations
Uganda's production of sunflower, safflower, and cottonseed oil increased from 94.9 thousand tons in 2018 to 103.9 thousand tons in 2023, while the domestic market volume grew from 87.2 thousand tons to 95.1 thousand tons over the same period. In value terms, the market peaked at $181.6 million in 2022 before moderating to $154.2 million in 2023, reflecting price volatility alongside the physical expansion.
A major driver was the strengthening export market. In 2020, a 97% spike in export prices for Ugandan sunflower seed made overseas sales more profitable, encouraging production. This was evidenced by active trade, including exports of unmodified oil to Burundi valued at $32.06 thousand that year.
The upward price trend persisted, with export prices surging another 52% in 2024. The market was also shaped by global forces, including the dominance of Russia and Ukraine in sunflower production, which influenced trade flows and pricing. Uganda established itself as a premium exporter, achieving some of Africa's highest prices at $1,968 per ton in 2024.
