The production of sunflower, safflower, and cottonseed oils in Mali began a strong upward trajectory in 2018–2019, with output rising from 43 800 t to 65 300 t and market volume expanding from 45 255 t to 67 768 t. This growth was supported by the commissioning of a new oil‑processing line in early 2018, which boosted local production capacity, and by field trials of sunflower cultivation aimed at diversifying the oilseed raw material base for refined oil manufacturing.

After a contraction in 2020–2021 that brought production down to 42 000 t and market size to 46 598 t, the market rebounded sharply in 2022. Production reached 60 800 t and total market volume 68 948 t. The recovery was fueled by a worldwide surge in demand for sunflower oil linked to rising health consciousness among consumers, coupled with supply‑chain disruptions caused by the COVID‑19 pandemic, which affected global availability and stimulated local output.

In 2023, both production and market volume declined again, to 46 200 t and 49 955 t respectively. During this period, global sunflower‑oil prices fell significantly, influencing domestic price levels and likely affecting local producers’ competitiveness. Concurrently, efforts to expand sunflower‑cultivation trials continued, while industry attention turned to addressing raw‑material shortages and further developing oil‑refining infrastructure.
