Earlier Report Observations

The Ugandan sugar cane market started the period with stable volumes around 5.5 million tons in 2018 and 2019. During this time, construction began on the large-scale Atiak Sugar Factory in northern Uganda, which promised to enhance future processing capacity. However, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and dampened demand, leading to a market contraction to 5.3 million tons.

A pronounced rebound occurred in 2021, with the market volume surging to 5.9 million tons. Growth continued over the following two years, reaching 6.2 million tons by 2023. This expansion was supported by the ongoing operation of the Atiak Sugar Factory as a key production facility and was accompanied by reported improvements in sugarcane yield during 2023.
