Production of sugar cane in Iran declined from 9.1 million tonnes in 2018 to 7.8 million tonnes in 2021. This contraction was primarily driven by a shift among farmers toward sugar beet, which requires less water and offers higher yields, reducing the area dedicated to cane. International sanctions further constrained agricultural inputs and resources, exacerbating the downturn. The market is also influenced by the collective nature of Iran's sugar industry, where developments at one major company can affect the entire sector.

From 2021, output recovered, rising to 8.3 million tonnes in 2022 and reaching 8.6 million tonnes in 2023. This growth occurred despite persistent cultivation challenges, including water scarcity, soil salinity, and high production costs, which have long characterized Iranian sugar cane farming.

Sugar cane production in Iran declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Iran produced 8 256 K t of sugar cane, marking a measured decrease of 3.7% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production increased by 8.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.7%. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 5.8%, while the largest increase was recorded in 2018 at 19.2%, when production reached its peak of 9 100 K t.

Exports sugar cane from Iran
