Earlier Report Observations

Sugar cane production in Northern Africa started at 22.5 million tons in 2018, a level supported by concerted efforts to boost yield through vertical expansion, the development of improved varieties, and the adoption of modern irrigation practices to conserve water.

Output subsequently eased to 21.3 million tons in 2019, saw a modest rebound to 21.8 million tons in 2020, then entered a gradual downtrend, reaching 20.7 million tons by 2022. The decline accelerated sharply in 2023, with production falling to 19.1 million tons. This drop was driven by severe supply-side constraints, as cane deliveries to mills collapsed due to soaring fertilizer prices, persistent irrigation problems, and increased labor costs.

In response to sectoral challenges, the authorities set the official cane procurement price at EGP 1,500 per ton for the 2024/2025 season and later raised it to EGP 2,500 per ton for the following season to support farmers and secure sugar supplies.
