Earlier Report Observations

Sugar beet production in the MENA region started at 20.5 million tonnes in 2018, held back by low sugar prices that prompted some producers to reduce output. The market volume grew to 21.6 million tonnes in 2019 before declining to 19.5 million tonnes in 2020.

A rebound to 22.3 million tonnes occurred in 2021. In 2022, a shift in Egyptian consumption patterns toward sugar cane instead of sugar beet contributed to a drop in beet production to 19.8 million tonnes. The market recovered to 20.7 million tonnes in 2023 after authorities directed a 30% increase in processing capacity and expanded cultivation area with incentive pricing for growers.

In 2024, sugar beet cultivation area in Egypt was further expanded to 600 thousand feddans, and the commissioning of the Al Qanater plant—with an annual capacity of up to 900 thousand tonnes of sugar—aimed to boost domestic production and reduce import dependence.
