African sugar beet production for human consumption showed significant volatility between 2018 and 2023. Output climbed from 14 188 thousand tonnes in 2018 to a high of 16 867 thousand tonnes in 2021, experiencing a sharp 13% increase in 2019 and a more than 20% surge in 2021 compared to the prior years.

This growth was interrupted by two notable contractions, with production falling by 14% in 2020 and again by 14% in 2022, before partially recovering to 15 624 thousand tonnes in 2023. The market volume, closely tracking domestic production due to negligible trade flows, mirrored this pattern of peaks and troughs throughout the period.

By 2024, sector development policies in North Africa aimed at future expansion. Morocco's sugar ministry announced plans to double sugar beet cultivation area to 40 000 hectares for the 2024/2025 campaign, while Egypt, the continent's leading producer, targeted higher beet output to strengthen food security and local processing capacity.

In 2020, Africa produced 14 009 K t of sugar beet, marking a significant decline of 12.7% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 4.6%, which translates to an annualized rate of 1.6%. The peak production was recorded in 2019 at 16 039 K t, with the largest year-on-year increase of 13.0% also occurring in that year.

In 2020, sugar beet exports from Africa totaled 150 t, a sharp decrease of 75.2% from the previous year. The maximum export volume was recorded in 2018 at 4 855 t. From 2017 to 2020, Saudi Arabia dominated the export structure for sugar beet in kind, accounting for 75.4% of total flows. Other markets played a less significant role, forming a smaller perimeter in the trade landscape.

Sugar beet exports from Africa declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 31 K $ US, representing a contraction of 66.0% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 97.8%, equating to an annualized rate of 71.8%.

During 2017–2020, Saudi Arabia was the primary destination for sugar beet exports in value terms, capturing 82.3% of total flows. The remaining exports were distributed among a fragmented group of other markets.

Market performance showed noticeable fluctuations over the period. Imports hit their lowest in 2019 and reached their highest in 2018, with a 2.9-fold gap between these years. In 2020, Africa imported 52 t of sugar beet, a 20.3% increase year-over-year. The minimum import volume was recorded in 2019 at 43 t, while the maximum was in 2018 at 124 t. The largest decline occurred in 2019 with a 65.1% drop, and the largest increase was in 2018, rising by 153.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, no single market dominated sugar beet imports in kind. The United Arab Emirates (11.3% of imports), the United Kingdom (9.9%), and France (8.2%) together accounted for only 29.3% of total imports. The majority of imports were spread across many smaller partners, each with modest individual shares.

The structure of sugar beet imports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 was highly diversified. Belgium (10.8% of imports), China (7.0%), and the United Arab Emirates (6.6%) together accounted for only 24.4% of total flows. The remaining 75.6% was dispersed among numerous smaller markets.
