Earlier Report Observations

Strawberry production in Costa Rica increased from 4 300 t in 2018 to 4 762 t in 2023, despite persistent reports of phytosanitary issues and climate-related challenges that particularly affected small growers. These factors, noted from 2018 onward, included rising plant health incidents and dependence on seasonal rainfall, which may have constrained faster expansion. Production peaked in 2020 at 4 681 t, dipped slightly in 2021, and then regained momentum through 2023.

Domestic market volume, calculated as production minus exports, fluctuated during the period, largely driven by export dynamics. A sharp rise in exports to 686 t in 2022 reduced the market size to 4 068 t, even as production grew. In 2023, exports fell to 372 t, allowing the market to recover to 4 390 t. That year, the Technological Institute of Costa Rica began providing technical support to improve cultivation practices and reduce costs, likely contributing to production stability, while the National Strawberry Fair in Vara Blanca helped promote local consumption.
