Strawberry market volume in Oceania fluctuated significantly between 2018 and 2023. After a contraction in 2020, the market rebounded sharply in 2021, reaching 78 624 t, a 31% increase from the previous year. This surge was underpinned by the industry's resilience and a strategic push to grow export markets, particularly from Western Australia to destinations in the Middle East and Asia.

Market volume subsequently declined in 2022 and 2023, settling at 65 873 t. Throughout this period, the industry maintained a positive trade balance for fresh strawberries, with exports remaining a key focus. Strong consumer demand persisted, supported by strawberries' high household penetration and year-round availability.

In 2024, production was impacted by torrential rain in northern New South Wales, which affected fruit development and tightened early-season supply. National production reached 80 741 t, and strawberry exports contributed to a record year for Australian fresh produce exports overall. Consumer preferences continued to favor strawberries, influenced by health and convenience trends.

Oceania's strawberry production grew for two consecutive years before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 72,364 tonnes. However, in 2020, output fell to 62,392 tonnes, representing a 13.8% decrease from the previous year. Over the entire period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 27.1%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 8.3%. The most significant year-on-year increase occurred in 2018, when production rose by 24.8%.

Oceania's strawberry production value increased for two years before experiencing a decline. In 2019, the value peaked at 435.8 million US dollars. In 2020, however, the output value dropped to 380.6 million US dollars, marking a substantial 12.7% decrease compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, the overall value increased by 13%, corresponding to an average annual growth rate of 4.2%. The largest year-on-year increase was recorded in 2018, with a rise of 15.3%.

Exports strawberries from Oceania

In 2019, Oceania's strawberry exports reached their highest level at 4,544 tonnes, with a notable 17.3% increase that year. However, in 2020, exports fell to 3,521 tonnes, which is 22.5% lower than in 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 15.6%, resulting in a compound annual growth rate of -5.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Thailand, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates were the primary destinations for Oceania's strawberry exports by volume. Thailand accounted for 21.5% of exports, Singapore for 19.8%, and the United Arab Emirates for 12.1%. Together, these three countries represented 53.5% of total export flows.

In 2019, the value of strawberry exports from Oceania saw an 11.4% increase. However, in 2020, export value dropped to 21.479 million US dollars, marking a 21.5% decline compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 25%, equating to an average annual decline of 9.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Thailand, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates were the main destinations for Oceania's strawberry exports by value. Thailand's share was 23.1%, Singapore's was 18.6%, and the United Arab Emirates' was 11.6%. Collectively, these three countries absorbed 53.3% of total export value.
