Orange production in Costa Rica reached 255.7 thousand tonnes in 2018, supported by the expansion of the Coopecerroazul cooperative, which increased its output from 3.3 million to 5.5 million units, and the formation of the inter-institutional group PITTA Cítricos to boost cultivation in key regions. The following year, production fell by 35% to 166.0 thousand tonnes as climatic factors and pests, such as rootworm, affected plantations.

Production rebounded sharply in 2020, rising 56% to 258.2 thousand tonnes, while orange exports dropped by 60% compared to 2018, contributing to a larger domestic market volume. After a decline in 2021, output recovered to 217.2 thousand tonnes in 2022 before easing to 201.0 thousand tonnes in 2023, with market size following a similar volatile pattern.

Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 9.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.2%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 166.0 thousand tons, which represented a 35.1% decline from the previous year.

The export market for oranges showed considerable volatility during this period. In 2020, Costa Rica exported 115 tons of oranges, a sharp 75.9% decrease year-over-year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 1 200 tons, which was a modest 0.4% increase from the previous year. The export market in value terms was highly unstable throughout the timeframe. In 2020, Costa Rica exported $106 thousand worth of oranges, down 20.2% from the previous year. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at $135 thousand, which represented a substantial 201.7% increase from 2017.
