Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the Brazilian strawberry market showed notable volatility. The market volume began at 179.6 thousand tons in 2018, a period characterized by production heavily oriented toward the domestic market and hampered by low productivity due to a lack of climate-adapted planting materials and limited use of protected cultivation technology. After a decline to 165.3 thousand tons in 2019, the market surged to 218.8 thousand tons in 2020.

Following the 2020 peak, the market volume contracted to 197.9 thousand tons in 2021 and fell further to 180.5 thousand tons in 2022. The decline in 2022 was influenced by a significant shortage of strawberry seedlings, especially in the southern region, which constrained domestic supply. A modest recovery to 189.0 thousand tons occurred in 2023, supported by the wider adoption of day-neutral strawberry varieties that enabled year-round harvesting, making production a more profitable business model for family farms and facilitating an expansion of cultivated area.

In the later part of the period, market developments included a social media-driven increase in demand for 'strawberries of love', climate-related challenges and pest pressures that affected crop quality and yields, and a steep rise in import volumes following the phased tariff reductions under the Mercosur-Egypt trade agreement. Concurrently, innovations in cold chain logistics and professionalization of transport helped reduce post-harvest losses and improved supply frequency for retailers.
