Earlier Report Observations

The Brazilian in-shell cashew nut market opened the period with production heavily concentrated in the northeastern states of Ceará, Piauí, and Rio Grande do Norte, as the country solidified its position as a major global exporter. Market volume experienced a gentle decline, falling from 147.9 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 138.9 thousand tonnes by 2020. This trend was influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, which restricted international trade, elevated freight costs, and limited almond exports.

A sharp contraction followed in 2021, with the market volume dropping to 110.6 thousand tonnes. During this time, the industry saw the launch of new vegan product segments like cashew butter and cheeses, driven by growing health-food demand. A dramatic recovery to 162 thousand tonnes occurred in 2022, primarily fueled by an increased reliance on imported raw material, with imports jumping to 14.9 thousand tonnes that year to supply processing.

Market volume receded again to 128 thousand tonnes in 2023. In subsequent developments, the adoption of higher-yielding dwarf cashew trees improved productivity and drought resistance, supporting future supply. However, by 2025, the sector faced new challenges as extra tariffs imposed by the U.S. raised export costs and led to contract cancellations.
