Earlier Report Observations

At the outset of the period, the Latvian strawberry sector benefited from focused research efforts. Institutions worked on refining fertilization techniques to improve yield and quality, while the transnational BERRIES project aimed to expand the genetic base for breeding through the development of new germplasm. These initiatives targeted the long-term sustainability and potential of domestic production.

The total volume of the fresh strawberry market in Latvia showed significant variation between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 2 691 t, it rose to 3 092 t in 2019 before a contraction to 2 826 t in 2020. A recovery to 3 066 t followed in 2021, preceding a major expansion that peaked at 4 125 t in 2022. The market then stabilized at a similar high level of 4 104 t in 2023.

Overall, the market demonstrated strong growth across the six-year span, increasing its volume by more than 1 400 t from the 2018 baseline to the highs of 2022 and 2023, despite intermittent yearly declines.
