The sharp rebound in 2022 was supported by dynamic export activity, with 23 million liters shipped in January alone, and further diversification through the incorporation of international grape varieties like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. In 2023, market volume declined to 26.8 million liters, partly reflecting an 8% drop in sparkling wine production and exports across the European Union, even as Portugal consolidated its position as the EU’s fifth-largest producer.

For 2024, overall wine production in Portugal fell by 8%, which may affect sparkling wine output, though key regions including Douro and Távora-Varosa continued to report average growth. These elements set the context for the market’s trajectory in the coming years.
