Earlier Report Observations
The sorghum market in the Central African Republic expanded from 30 500 tonnes in 2018 to 31 314 tonnes in 2019. This growth was driven by the mobilization of producers through the Central African Agricultural Development Agency (ACDA) and NGOs within a peace consolidation context, which aimed at strengthening local sorghum production.
Market volume dropped sharply to 16 885 tonnes in 2020, marking a significant contraction. A gradual recovery followed, with the market reaching 17 392 tonnes in 2021 and 18 451 tonnes by 2023. The increase in 2022 was partly attributable to abundant August-September rainfall that favored sorghum harvests in the northern part of the country.
Structural constraints such as inadequate storage infrastructure and import dependence persisted throughout the period, although sorghum imports remained negligible. By 2024, market supply improved due to the 2023/2024 harvest, contributing to relative price stability.
