Earlier Report Observations
Cassava market volume in the Central African Republic showed significant volatility from 2018 to 2023. Production initially increased from 1 520 thousand tons in 2018 to 1 580 thousand tons in 2019, then dropped sharply to 1 031 thousand tons in 2020. Throughout this period, cassava remained the staple food crop, but production faced persistent constraints from cassava mosaic disease (CMD), which affected an average of 84% of crops and was spread primarily through infected cuttings, keeping yields low at around 3 tons per hectare.
The sharp contraction in 2020 coincided with the global economic crisis, which triggered a spike in cassava prices and reduced accessibility for consumers. From 2021 onward, production slowly recovered, reaching 1 127 thousand tons by 2023. During this recovery, cassava prices surged again in 2023, constraining household purchasing power and forcing consumption adjustments. The market’s gradual expansion occurred despite the ongoing disease pressure and economic instability.
