Earlier Report Observations

Sesame seed production in the Central African Republic increased in 2018 and 2019, reaching 301 thousand tons, supported by local sector-structuring initiatives such as an agricultural cooperative project aimed at job creation and meeting growing domestic and international demand. Traditional sesame cultivation, particularly among the Gbaya people, with its cultural and food value, provided a stable foundation for output.

Output sharply fell to 180 thousand tons in 2020 due to a three-year conflict that severely disrupted agricultural activities and resource availability. Despite this, the 2020-2021 season saw expanded sesame cultivation, and stocks were rapidly depleted owing to strong global demand, creating positive prospects for market recovery.

Post-conflict production gradually recovered, reaching 197 thousand tons by 2023. This growth was underpinned by sustained worldwide demand for African sesame, especially from China, which imported large volumes, stimulating regional production. The global trend of increasing sesame use in food and cosmetic products further supported market dynamics.
