Brazil's silkworm cocoon market volume fell from 3 055 t in 2018 to 1 715 t in 2023, a decline rooted in long-standing competition from cheaper Chinese silk and unfavorable economic conditions that reduced the competitiveness of domestic sericulture.

The downturn accelerated from 2021 onward due to severe damage from pesticide drift, which caused nearly total crop losses in some years. In response, the state implemented an Integrated Action Plan to combat pesticide drift in May 2021, but the industry, led by the sole industrial silk spinner Bratac, continued to operate at only 40% of its capacity because of raw material shortages, directly reducing market volume.

Efforts to counter the decline included product diversification, such as developing silk-blended jeans, and genetic research by universities to create more resilient silkworm strains, aiming to stabilize the production chain centered in Paraná state.
