Earlier Report Observations

The Brazilian raw silk market volume declined sharply from 692 t in 2018 to 342 t in 2022. The initial drop was influenced by a drought in São Paulo state that limited production growth in 2018. A further contraction in 2022 was driven by a significant reduction in mulberry plantation area and challenges related to irregular pesticide application in the main producing region of Paraná.

Despite the overall market contraction, the industry remained focused on producing the world's whitest silk for export to luxury segments in Europe and Asia. New producers entered the market in 2019, and the company Minerva reported record financial results in 2022, indicating robust performance within the sector.

In 2021, the 'Seda Brasil' project was launched to address systemic challenges, promote training for small producers, and develop new products like sericin-based cosmetics to add value. By 2023, the market volume showed signs of stabilization, edging up slightly to 346 t.
