Earlier Report Observations

Production of yams in Brazil increased gradually from 252 thousand tons in 2018 to 256 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was supported by the adoption of advanced agricultural technologies in the leading producing state of Espírito Santo, including efficient irrigation and integrated pest management, which boosted productivity. In 2022, prolonged drought in Espírito Santo affected output, but producers adapted by bringing supply forward to avoid losses, maintaining overall production levels.

The domestic market volume for yams initially edged down from 249.8 thousand tons in 2018 to 246.8 thousand tons in 2020, partly due to rising exports, but then recovered to 249.1 thousand tons by 2023. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 heightened demand for frozen and convenient food items, stimulating consumption of frozen yam products. By 2023, the broader growth of the frozen food market and the expansion of e-commerce for chilled and frozen delivery further improved accessibility and supported domestic consumption.

Exports of yams expanded significantly, from 2.1 thousand tons in 2018 to 6.9 thousand tons in 2023, with Espírito Santo shipping to 19 countries in 2022, including the United States and the United Kingdom. This export growth contributed to market dynamics and helped balance the slight dip in domestic consumption in the earlier years.
