Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the market for silkworm cocoons in Latin America and the Caribbean contracted steadily from 3 055 t to 1 713 t. This decline was primarily driven by pesticide drift from neighboring farms, which caused significant caterpillar mortality and accumulated economic losses exceeding R$ 55 million for producers. Climatic instability and inadequate crop management further reduced mulberry tree acreage and cocoon productivity, compounding the downturn.

Despite state support plans and research into disease prevention, the industry faced structural challenges. Outmigration from rural areas and a lack of interest from younger generations in taking over family farms reduced the number of active producers. While the main processor, Bratac, maintained luxury export contracts and had annual purchasing capacity for over 9 000 t of green cocoons, actual market supply fell far short, underscoring the severity of the production crisis.
