Earlier Report Observations

The Turkish shelled almond market expanded significantly between 2018 and 2022, with volume growing from 58 894 t to 112 718 t. This growth was driven by increased domestic production, which rose from 53 175 t to 96 662 t, aided by the expansion of almond cultivation areas in regions like Muğla, Mersin, Antalya, and Denizli. Efforts to develop local varieties and improve pollination efficiency also contributed. Imports more than doubled over the period, boosted by a reduction in almond tariffs to 15% in 2018, which encouraged formal import channels and enhanced market transparency.

Consumer trends shifted towards healthy and natural products, raising demand for organic and natural shelled almonds. New product segments, such as roasted shelled almonds, emerged in 2020, catering to evolving tastes. Despite price volatility in 2019 that led some producers to uproot orchards, production continued to increase. By 2022, almond output had risen by 7% year-on-year, and higher prices that year affected consumer behavior but did not hinder domestic sales.

In 2023, market volume dipped slightly to 109 063 t as domestic production fell to 84 885 t, though imports surged to 53 453 t, partly offsetting the decline. The overall market value fluctuated during the period, peaking at $697.2 million USD in 2019 before moderating to $525.6 million USD in 2023, reflecting changes in almond prices.
