Earlier Report Observations
The European market for shelled almonds expanded from 484 thousand tonnes in 2018 to over 574 thousand tonnes in 2021. This growth was primarily driven by almonds remaining the most used nut in new product launches across the continent, supported by strong demand from the local bakery, confectionery, and snack industries. Europe's leadership in almond-based innovation, accounting for nearly half of global new product introductions, sustained consumption during this period.
After peaking in 2021, the market volume contracted to 448 thousand tonnes in 2022 and further to 401 thousand tonnes in 2023. The decline in 2022 was largely due to reduced consumer purchasing power following pandemic-related closures, which dampened overall demand. In 2023, while local production capacity was strengthened by the opening of a new 7,400 m² shelling plant in France aimed at reviving the domestic almond sector, the overall market size decreased as significantly higher export volumes reduced domestic availability.
