Shelled almonds market in Greece

The Greek shelled almonds market showed considerable movement between 2018 and 2023. The market volume began at 18 649 tonnes in 2018 before falling sharply to 12 359 tonnes the following year. A recovery phase then elevated the volume to 14 610 tonnes in 2020, with the market stabilizing near this level at 14 664 tonnes in 2021.

In 2022, the market volume grew to 15 991 tonnes. This expansion occurred alongside significant challenges for domestic producers, including a frost event in March that damaged almond blossoms in the Amphipolis region and increased pressure from traders offering low prices amid rising costs for fuel and energy. These conditions prompted producer mobilizations and meetings with the deputy minister to secure frost damage compensation, while government-backed programs for orchard restructuring were activated to address the loss of traditional markets.

By 2023, the market volume receded to 14 566 tonnes, bringing it back to the range observed in the earlier part of the period.

In 2020, Greece produced 7 686 tonnes of shelled almonds, marking a 28.9% increase from the previous year. However, over the period from 2017 to 2020, production declined by 34%, averaging an annual decrease of 12.9%. The lowest production was recorded in 2019 at 5 965 tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2018 with 13 166 tonnes. The most significant drop was observed in 2019, when production fell by 54.7%.

In 2020, the value of shelled almond production in Greece reached 45 149 thousand US dollars, up 9.0% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, the production value decreased by 43.8%, with an average annual decline of 17.5%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 41 424 thousand US dollars, and the highest was in 2018 at 94 810 thousand US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2019, falling by 56.3%, while the biggest increase was in 2018, rising by 17.9%.

Shelled almond exports from Greece grew for the third consecutive year in 2020, reaching 1 911 tonnes, a 15.9% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports rose by 79.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 21.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Bulgaria, Albania, and Cyprus were the top destinations for Greece's shelled almond exports in volume terms, accounting for 26.3%, 25.1%, and 22.8% of exports, respectively. Together, these three countries represented 74.2% of total export flows.

After two years of growth, Greece's shelled almond export value declined in 2020, reaching 11 228 thousand US dollars, a 1.9% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value increased by 52.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 15.1%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 11 449 thousand US dollars, and the largest increase occurred in 2018, rising by 38.3%.
